Part One — The Wallet

How to download, set up, and use Exodus

01

What is Exodus?

Exodus is a non-custodial, multi-asset cryptocurrency wallet available on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. It supports over 300 cryptocurrencies — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, USDT, and more — all managed from a single interface.

  • Non-custodial: your private keys live on your device; Exodus never touches your funds
  • No account needed: no email address, no KYC verification, no registration of any kind
  • Built-in exchange: swap assets directly inside the wallet at any time
  • Live portfolio tracker: real-time values for every asset you hold
02

Downloading Exodus

Always download Exodus from the official website. Counterfeit wallets exist on third-party sites and are designed to steal your funds the moment you import a seed phrase.

  • Open your browser and navigate to exodus.com
  • Click Download in the top navigation bar
  • Select your platform: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android
  • Windows: run the .exe installer and follow the setup prompts
  • macOS: open the .dmg, drag Exodus into your Applications folder
  • Mobile: use only the App Store or Google Play links found on the official site
Security: Never download Exodus from search ads, forum posts, social media links, or messaging groups. The official website is the only trustworthy source.
03

Creating Your Wallet and Securing Your Seed Phrase

When Exodus opens for the first time, a wallet is generated automatically. What follows is the single most important step in your entire crypto journey.

  • Launch Exodus — your wallet is ready immediately, no username required
  • Go to Settings, then Backup — or click the backup prompt in the app
  • Your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase will appear on screen
  • Write every word down, in exact order, on paper
  • Store that paper somewhere secure and fireproof
Non-negotiable: Your 12-word phrase is the master key to every asset in your wallet. Exodus does not store it. If you lose it and your device fails, your funds are permanently unreachable. Never photograph it, save it to a notes app, or type it into any website, ever.
04

Setting a Password

A password protects the Exodus app on your device. It is an additional layer of local security that prevents someone with physical access to your computer from opening the wallet.

  • Click the Settings gear icon at the bottom left of the app
  • Navigate to Security
  • Click Set Password
  • Enter a strong password, confirm it, and save
Note: This password only locks the app on this specific device. If you reinstall Exodus or move to a new machine, you will restore your wallet using your 12-word seed phrase. The password alone is not sufficient.
05

Receiving Cryptocurrency

To receive funds, you share your wallet address — a long string of characters unique to each asset — or a QR code with whoever is sending to you. Every asset has its own address; never send Bitcoin to an Ethereum address.

  • Click Receive on the Exodus dashboard
  • Select the specific asset you want to receive
  • Your receiving address and QR code appear on screen
  • Copy the address or show the QR code to the sender
  • Confirmations typically take a few minutes to an hour depending on the network
Before sharing: confirm you have selected the correct asset and the correct network. Sending USDT on the wrong chain, for example, results in a permanent loss.
06

Sending Cryptocurrency

Sending crypto is straightforward. The consequences of a mistake, however, are permanent. Blockchain transactions cannot be reversed, recalled, or refunded under any circumstances.

  • Click Send on the dashboard
  • Select the asset you want to send
  • Paste the recipient's wallet address or scan their QR code
  • Enter the amount to send
  • Review the network fee — this is paid to the blockchain, not to Exodus
  • Verify the address character by character, then confirm the transaction
Clipboard risk: Malware exists that silently replaces a copied wallet address with an attacker's address. Always check at least the first and last six characters of any address after pasting.
07

Using the Built-In Exchange

Exodus includes a built-in swap feature that lets you exchange one cryptocurrency for another without leaving the wallet. No external exchange account, no sign-up required.

  • Click Exchange in the left sidebar
  • Choose the asset you have and the one you want
  • Enter the amount and review the quoted rate and fee
  • Confirm the swap — most complete within a few minutes
Large amounts: The built-in exchange includes a small spread in the quoted rate. For substantial swaps, compare with a major exchange first to confirm the rate is competitive.
08

Security Habits That Actually Matter

Self-custody means you are the last line of defense. These habits address the most common ways people lose access to their funds.

  • Seed phrase offline, always: paper in a safe — never digitized, never photographed, never typed anywhere
  • Verify every address: check characters before every transaction, without exception
  • Update regularly: Exodus updates include security patches; keep the app current
  • No one legitimate asks for your seed phrase: not Exodus support, not anyone
  • Hardware wallet for large holdings: pair Exodus with a Trezor or Ledger for long-term storage
  • Lock when unattended: enable the password lock whenever you step away
A note before you continue

Your wallet is secure.
Your records probably are not.

Serious crypto users track everything: every transaction, every address they have sent to, every exchange rate at the time, every note on a token they are watching. That information lives in browser bookmarks, scattered text files, and fragmented notes — until it does not. NoteVault Pro is the desktop tool built for exactly this problem.
